On October 4, 2008, The Second Company Governor's Guard will celebrate its 200th anniversary. Events will include a procession in their birthplace, New Haven, followed by a Battalion Review, attended by all four Militia Units. The day will end with a Gala Ball at the Omni New Haven.
In 1808 Elihu Munson and a number of gentlemen of New Haven, petitioned the General Assembly at its October session, to form a troop of cavalry to function as Governor’s horse guards. As a result, the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard (2GHG) was formed by an act of the General Assembly, with Elihu Munson (variously spelled Monson in different places) as Brevet Major. The duties of the original company were “to attend upon and escort him [the Governor] in times of peace and war.”
Today, The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard continues to serve Connecticut as willingly as it did during Colonial times. 2GHG is part of the organized militia of the State of Connecticut, under the direction of the Governor, and the National Guard. Although today’s Trooper most often rides in ceremonial functions, cavalry military training of horse and rider takes place throughout the year. The public is always welcome to visit during regular drill hours or events.
