SECOND COMPANY GOVERNOR'S HORSE GUARD

CELEBRATING 200 YEARS OF HISTORY

4 Wildlife Dr.          Newtown, Ct.          (203) 426-9046

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard (2GHG) is an all-volunteer state militia unit, originally formed to serve and protect the Governor.  As an active Cavalry Unit, 2GHG serves the Governor and the State of Connecticut under the direction of the Connecticut Army National Guard, under the command of the Adjutant General, Major General Thaddeus J. Martin.  One of the oldest cavalry units in continuous service in the United States, 2GHG was chartered in 1808 and has had a history throughout the years of dedicated service to the citizenry of the State of Connecticut in times of peace and war and to the preservation of the Cavalry in Connecticut. 2GHG remains ever conscious of its responsibilities to the citizens of Connecticut and thankful to those who have made our continuing existence possible.

2GHG was formed to serve and protect the Governor.  Our main mission is to serve the Governor and the State of Connecticut as a dress and ceremonial unit of the Connecticut Army National Guard. 2GHG is dedicated to preserving the traditions of the cavalry in Connecticut.  Troopers ride in 1928 McClellan saddles – the last issued by the U.S. Army.

Military Drill – both mounted and dismounted – is practiced at weekly mandatory drills.  2GHG marches in over a dozen parades annually – representing the Connecticut Army National Guard.  We wear the uniforms of the Connecticut National Guard proudly, and honor traditional Army values:

  • Loyalty
  • Duty
  • Respect
  • Selfless Service
  • Honor
  • Integrity
  • Personal Courage
